Georgia has seen 34 nights of street demonstrations and a string of public resignations, triggered by the ruling party’s decision to suspend a push to start talks on joining the European Union, demanding new elections and the release of all activist protesters detained during the ongoing protests.

On New Year’s Eve anti-government protests filled the broad central avenue that runs past parliament with Georgian Supra to celebrate the day together, in such great numbers there is barely space to move, on the road or the pavement either side.

Georgia’s pro-western president Salome Zurabichvili addressed Georgians and then came to the protestants to celebrate the day with them..

When the protest ended activists cleaned Rustaveli avenue.

Everyone marked, nowhere there has ever been a New Year’s event of such a scale in the world. Georgians have shown the world an example – of unity, patriotism, courage, struggle, love, solidarity, celebration – discipline. They themselves are Europe and nothing can turn that back! These tidy parks, cleaned and tidy Rustaveli, are a symbol of all this.

The whole world  witnessed these days of the tireless struggle for the European path of Georgia!
